Modern version of Windows have always provided a facility to search for file, but in Windows 7 and Windows 10, there is a place to search for files, settings and programs on the fly. 


Windows 7

  • Select the start button in the lower left corner, or press the Windows ( ) key on your keyboard and begin to type your phrase into the search box. The start menu will disappear and results for files, programs and system settings will start to appear in it's place. 


  • You can also hold down the Windows key and press "F" to summon the same search facility.
  • Within Windows Explorer you can use the search box in the top right corner of the window to search within your relevant folder and all subfolders within it.
  • Alternatively with a file selected with the folder, type the first few letters of the name to find files that match.

Windows 10

  • You can also hold down the Windows key and press "S" to summon the same search facility.
  • Within File Explorer you can use the search box in the top right corner of the window to search within your relevant folder and all subfolders within it. 

  • Alternatively with a file selected with the folder, type the first few letters of the name to find files that match.
  • Cortana is currently disabled on Trust PCs.
